5 Tips Every College Freshman Should Know

So you just graduated from high school and the next stage in your life is college. You’re a FRESHMAN. That is exciting! You should congratulate yourself.

You will probably ask yourself these questions at some point during your time between the last day of high school and the first day of college: How am I going to survive without my friends? Will I make new friends? Am I going to fit in? Am I going to pass my classes? Will I like it here?

Well, don’t fret. Here are five tips from a seasoned pro (me) that will help you get through those first tough weeks of freshman year.

1. Remember you are not alone.

You are not the only one who is nervous. If you go to college out-of-state, you are not the only one who is new to the state you are in. Take a deep breath. You can do this.

2. Take as many credits as you think you can handle, but do not overwhelm yourself.

Explore and challenge yourself with your classes freshman year so you can determine what your interests are. College is a place in which you will discover your likes and dislikes and who you are as a person. It will also shed light on what you want to pursue as a career. If you do not know this from the beginning, do not get discouraged. It will come to you.

3. Be open to meeting new people.

Join a few organizations that capture your attention. Be friendly to those who live in your dorm hall. If you do not live in a dorm hall, go to on campus events to meet other students who are open to meeting new people just like you. It might be hard at first, but just think back to my first tip – you are not alone!

4. Do not get discouraged by college.

It’s going to get overwhelming. You’re going to feel stressed. But trust me when I say, it is possible to get through it. Just take it one day at a time. Deep breaths, freshman!

5. Make the most of your experience.

If you remember nothing else, remember this: you will never have the experience of a college freshman again, so make the most of it! This is your time to have fun and accept everything that life has to offer you. Study as hard as you party. Be open to every new invitation to hang out, try new things, and keep your health a priority.
