Tips for Online Dating in College

It’s funny how love has become so accessible to us nowadays. No more waiting around for months and months for that one guy in calculus who makes your heart beat. No more trying to connect with cuties out at the local bar, or campus party. Nope. Today, relationships are no more than a click (or a swipe) away.

Online dating has made its way into our daily lives, and as a college student, I find that dating sites/apps such as Tinder, Bumble, OKCupid etc.; are extremely helpful in meeting new people! So whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned player, here are my top tips and tricks for online dating while you’re in college.

Don’t be scared or embarrassed

There seems to be a stigma floating around saying online dating is for losers: it’s not. From hipsters to party animals to shy bookworms; everybody has tried it at least once. Plus, when starting college, online dating is a great way to get to know new people, especially if you just moved to a new city! I have met guys online that didn’t work out as partners, but are now dear friends of mine.

Mention what school you go to

This helps find cuties that also attend your school and probably hang out near you. In my opinion, it removes an awkwardness barrier, because you know the other person is also probably new to the place too! It also makes it easier to meet up casually on a daily basis, like at the cafeteria for lunch or after class on campus. Plus, I like knowing that the stranger I’m meeting exists in the school’s system and can be reported to authorities easier, in case something happens.

Make sure you’re comfortable

You should never feel forced to meet somebody, because if they make you feel uneasy online, they probably will too in person. Of course, it’s normal to be a little shy at first about meeting people for the first time, but NEVER feel obligated to carry things further with someone. You should also make sure you meet your new prospect in a public place. It ensures they can’t do anything they’d get in trouble for.

Know what you’re looking for, and make that clear

The thing with online dating is that not everyone is looking for the same thing. Some search for potential life partners, others go for one night stands. It can get awkward if you expect to chat about your upcoming midterms and favorite movies and then the other person starts sending messages NSFW. I personally started looking for only casual relationships, and by sticking to that, I’ve met really cool people who didn’t expect more than that as well!

Persevere

It’s no secret the internet is full of odd people and creeps who should be avoided at all costs. You ARE going to meet people and be disappointed sometimes. Some dates will be a total fail, while some are a total win; you’ll never know if you don’t try. Online dating’s main flaw is that even though chatting with someone can give you a good idea of who they are, you don’t get the full, tangible version. So remember to get back in there and try again, champion.
